On June 10, 2021, the National Steering Committee for Graduate Education in Journalism and Communication convened the Expert Review Meeting for the National Outstanding Teaching Cases in the Master of Journalism and Communication Program at the School of New Media of Peking University. The meeting focused on advancing the development of a national teaching case repository for the professional degree program in journalism and communication, promoting case development and research, and enhancing the quality of case-based teaching. Experts reviewed and discussed the cases submitted to the 2020 National Outstanding Teaching Case Competition for the Master of Journalism and Communication Program.
The review meeting was attended by Lu Shaoyang, Guo Qingguang, and Gao Xiaohong, Vice Chairs of the National Steering Committee for Graduate Education in Journalism and Communication, and by Xie Xinzhou, Secretary-General of the Committee. Other participants included Yin Hong, Professor at Tsinghua University; Ma Guocang, Chairman of China News Publishing & Media Group; Liu Bin, Professor at China University of Political Science and Law; Yang Gu, President of Guangming Online; and Xuan Xingzhang, Vice President of the China Cyberspace Research Institute. The meeting was chaired by Xie Xinzhou.
Expert Review Meeting on Outstanding MJC Teaching Cases
Professor Xie Xinzhou delivered a report titled “Overview of the 2020 National Outstanding Teaching Case Competition for the Master of Journalism and Communication Program.” The report introduced the organizational process of the competition, its evaluation principles and procedures, and the results of the preliminary expert review conducted through remote evaluation. This competition marked the first national teaching case evaluation initiative organized by the Steering Committee. Officially launched on December 10, 2020, the competition received 217 case submissions from 76 authorized Master of Journalism and Communication (MJC) programs by the deadline of March 15, 2021.
The submitted cases covered a wide range of topics, including journalism ethics and regulation, journalistic practice, international communication, new media management, public opinion governance, sports journalism and communication, advertising and marketing, broadcasting and television theory and practice, cultural industries and media management, health communication, and media technology and innovation.
Following the preliminary remote review, the top four cases from each evaluation group advanced to the final review stage. During the expert meeting, members of the Steering Committee and invited industry experts conducted collective deliberations and final evaluations of the shortlisted cases. Ultimately, the competition selected one First Prize, three Second Prizes, ten Third Prizes, and seven Honorable Mentions. The Secretariat of the Steering Committee announced that the list of award recipients would be publicly posted on the Committee’s official website for a seven-day review period. After the public announcement period, and in the absence of objections, the final list of award-winning teaching cases would be formally released.

In addition, in accordance with the latest work arrangements and requirements related to the revision of the 2021 national catalog of academic disciplines and degree programs by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the meeting also reviewed the Feasibility Report on Establishing a Doctoral Degree Program in Journalism and Communication. Members of the Steering Committee and invited experts engaged in detailed discussions of the report and developed a set of final revision recommendations.
